Does anyone find this bit of Pokemon nostalgia weird?

Yeah. I thought only i really payed attention to that. I think one of the trainers accuses you of being a peeping tom. Although, in the Heart Gold and Soul Silver versions they change what he says to "This gym is great! It's full of strong trainers" or something like that. Yeah...
