How do i get farther in Pokemon Heart Gold (kanto)?

Ive won gym battles in cerulean,saffron, vermilion, celadon, and fuchsia city... i have no idea how to get to Viridian city, Pewter city or Cinnabar island all the routes seem to be blocked. HELP PLEASE!!!
