As a Canadian, are you allowed to rent a beach house in the US for the summer?

and live there for the summer by yourself? Cause the border people always seem so strict and stuff! For example one time I was just crossing the border to go shopping at the mall and they made me do fingerprints!!!! Anyone know the rules about this? thanks
